I heard from many of you with questions about my recent closet renovation. If you missed the post, you can read more about it here. Several of you had a lot of questions about how to organize your clothing when you don’t have a lot of space. I consulted a closet organizing guru girlfriend and we came up with a few space saving closet ideas that really do work!
Hang Pants From Their Waistband
One space saving trick that really does work is to hang your pants and jeans vertically from their waistband rather than folding them over on a hanger. Think about it: you essentially double their width when you fold them over on a hanger. I use Holding Hangers to hang my pants from the waistband. It’s a genius invention that originated in Europe and is now available in the U.S. for the first time. Holding hangers are spring loaded so that the hanger inserts into the waistband of your jeans and pants (and skirts too!). Yet, remarkably, the hanger does not stretch out the waistband! Bonus, it’s also the perfect solution for those off-the-shoulder or one shoulder dresses and tops that are difficult to hang! Store Shoes Alternating Toe/Heel Placement
Shoe storage takes up so much room! You can save at least one inch per pair of shoes if you alternate toe/heel placement when you store them on a shelf. Most standard flat shoes take 8-9 inches of width to store. Alternating them can save you one inch of space per shoe. That can make a big difference if you have a lot of shoes. Plus alternating the toe/heel on your closet shelf allows you to see shoe detail and heel height.
Use Storage Baskets
Storage baskets can be really helpful in holding accessories in one small place without taking up a lot of space. You can throw a ton of hats, scarves, or other accessories into those bins. They look neat and orderly but keep these items within reach.
