One request that came in from my reader survey was for suggestions on new ways to wear items you might already have in your closet. So I decided to start a closet refresh series where I show you a fresh new way to wear some of your closet staples. In this installment I’m focusing on mixing neutrals to make more interesting color combinations for winter.
I think a lot of us, myself included, get stuck in a rut and wear a lot of black in the winter. Maybe it matches our mood during the grayest days of the year or maybe it’s because we’ve been packing on the winter lbs and we gravitate toward black because it’s slimming — whatever the reason — incorporating other neutral colors into our wardrobe is just as easy and perhaps more interesting visually. Consider mixing grey, brown, taupe, olive, and white for your winter neutral color palette.
My second favorite color to wear in the winter after black is grey. I already have a lot of it in my closet and I’m sure you do too. I think it looks great with my white denim jeans. I love wearing white denim in the winter and despite conventional wisdom they are appropriate to wear year round. If the thought of wearing white in winter puts you in a tailspin, read my post on how to wear white year round here.
In this look, I topped my grey sweater and white jeans with another neutral: a camel coat. It actually feels good to break out of my comfort zone and wear a little “color” in winter. Give it a try!
