We’re at that point where it’s nearing the middle of winter and I start to feel the winter doldrums set in. One way I shake it off is by brightening up my winter outfits. Pulling out the white denim isn’t the most natural choice in the winter but paired with the right pieces it is a fresh winter look that might just lift your spirits and remind you that spring is around the corner.
I’ve heard from enough of you on this topic to know that you feel silly wearing white in the winter because you think you are breaking a major fashion rule. Despite conventional wisdom it is appropriate to wear white year round and a neutral winter outfit can even be chic. Admittedly putting together a white winter outfit can be intimidating. The trick to wearing white year-round is to pair it with other seasonally appropriate colors. In the winter months white looks great with other neutral colors like gray, black, or the off-whites (tan, cream, and beige) in seasonally appropriate fabrics and textures like a sweater, tweed, or faux fur. A neutral color boot or bootie completes the outfit. One of my favorite combinations is to wear all of the neutral colors together like this:
Now that you know what to wear with white in the winter, here’s what not to wear — summer fabrics. Your winter neutral outfit will quickly look out of place if you wear it with a fabric that is light and airy like a light cotton gauze or linen. Not only will you not be dressed warm enough for the weather, your outfit will look out of place.
