I’m coming up for air and popping in to share all that I’ve been up to lately. Spring cleaning, that’s what! A few weeks ago I had my closet redone and I’ve been doing a ton of purging. Coincidentally it’s spring so it seemed appropriate to write a post on what I’ve learned about spring cleaning and closet organization.

Organize First By Season, Then By Category
Sorting through a closet is hard work my friends. I really struggled with how to keep everything organized. When things aren’t in order, I just can’t think. It really helped me to start the arduous process of organizing my closet by organizing everything by season. I put all of my fall/winter clothing in one section of my closet and all of my spring/summer clothing in another section. The sections are above and below each other. When the seasons change I’ll switch their location so that the current season is on the bottom and more accessible. Once I sorted my clothing by season, I hung them in their sections by category. I put all of my skirts together. My shoes are all in one place as are my pants and jackets. You get the idea. Do this for everything in your closet.

Third, Organize By Color
Once I had everything organized by season, then by the type of clothing item, I hung them in order by color. So all my black sweaters are together. All of my white tee shirts are together and so on. I did this for my shoes also. I kinda prefer rainbow order but you could organize by color in any way that makes sense to you. It makes getting dressed so much easier when everything is organized by color. If I’m making a decision about shoes to wear with an outfit I can look at all of my color options together and then decide.

Store All Of Your Clothing Items In Your Closet
Before I had my closet redone, I stored my purses in a drawer in my bureau. My scarves and belts were in another drawer and tee shirts were stored their too. They were apart from the other items in my closet. This time around I made sure to put all of my clothes in my closet. That old saying “out of sight, out of mind” rings true here. If you don’t see it, you won’t wear it. I wanted all of my clothes, shoes, and accessories together so I would wear them.

Got any more closet organization tips? I’d love to hear them. Shoot me a note in the comments below.
