We all know there are few occasions to get dressed up and celebrate these days but when I heard that the Kentucky Derby would go on this year I couldn’t help but get a little excited. Even if this is an occasion with just your immediate family or if you’ll spend Saturday watching the race with a few close friends, this might just be the best reason to get out of your athleisure and get dressed up! Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. Today I’ll walk you through the key elements of your derby day celebration so you can be off to the races in style (even if you don’t have a crowd to appreciate your effort).
It’s All About The Hat
When you are building your derby outfit, your hat is the centerpiece. Start here. You want to find a hat or fascinator to wear that stands out and makes a statement. It really doesn’t matter what you choose as long as you are comfortable. So dig through your closet or get creative if you don’t already have a hat to wear.
The Dress Is Next
Dust off the dresses in your closet. Your derby dress does not have to match your hat, it just needs to compliment it — so stick to a simple dress in a color that compliments your hat. If your hat is simple you can amp up your dress and choose something more elaborate.
Cocktails In Hand
If there is an area of your Derby Day prep that will be appreciated, it will be the effort you put into creating the perfect cocktail. Here are some great recipes to try starting with a Mint Julep, the signature Kentucky Derby cocktail.

Moonshine-Cherry Blush
