Like many of us I get lazy about getting dressed and changing out of my workout gear. Sometimes I don’t and I end up wearing my yoga pants for the rest of the day. One exception is when I play tennis. I don’t love to wear a tennis skirt but sometimes I’m required to. I feel foolish wearing my skirt afterward so I change out of it immediately. Now that tennis apparel is trending in streetwear I’ve been given permission to be lazy again. For anyone who finds themselves in a tennis skirt I’ll show you some ideas on how to transition your athletic wear into athleisure wear this spring.
Tennis skirts can look out of place when worn away from the court but it is nice to be able to transition from playing a match to running around town without going home to change first. To make the transition work, you will have to add a layer or swap out your top otherwise you will look like you just came tennis. With a little planning it’s easy to transition your outfit from the court to the street. Here are some ideas on how to do sporty tennis chic.
First, the type of skirt matters. Pleated or plain front A line tennis skirts transition best to streetwear. These are some of my favorites:
Second, swap out the tennis sneakers for some street style sneakers, like these:
:: WEAR IT WITH AN OVERSIZED HOODIE, SWEATER, OR SWEATSHIRT
A good rule of thumb when wearing a more revealing piece like a tennis skirt is to balance it with something more conservative in coverage. An oversized sweater or sweatshirt balances out the mini skirt on the bottom which is why these two make a good pair.
:: THROW A CARDIGAN ON
A cardigan is an easy way to dress up your tennis outfit on the go. You can wear a shorter one buttoned up to cover your tank underneath or a longer one unbuttoned that hits at the skirt hem. Cardigan and cami sweater sets (you know, the ones we wore in the 90s) are trending again. Try wearing a twinset with your tennis skirt.
:: ADD A PREPPY SWEATER
An argyle or varsity style sweater is all you need to nail the preppy look.
:: WEAR IT WITH A FEMININE STYLE TOP
Puff sleeves and Peter Pan collars are feminine style tops that will complement your tennis skirt. Be cautious though the outfit can quickly become “too cute”.
