Birkenstocks were a staple in my college wardrobe back in the 90s. The last time I remember wearing them was 1994 — I was a college Sophomore at the University of Michigan. While Birkenstocks were a common sight on my college campus in Ann Arbor, I just can’t remember if the rest of the world was wearing them. Here I am during my first summer as an intern in Washington, D.C. wearing my Birkenstocks.
A lot has changed since those carefree days. Fast forward twenty-plus years and Birkenstocks are everywhere again. I’ve heard grumblings among girlfriends that they are ugly and not flattering on anyone. Well….I’m just grateful that they are not crocs. Can I get an amen?
I personally love a Birkenstock. But with a caveat — they have to be worn in the right circumstance. To me that means only in a casual setting and usually only during the day. If you wear them out in the evening it should be because you are going for a hippie-chic vibe.
The Birkenstock trend is easy to jump on because they are super comfortable, provide plenty of arch support (most of us age 30 plus know the importance of arch support — plantar fasciitis anyone?), and perfect for logging all your steps on your summer vacation.
Most of us have seen the traditional “Arizona” Birkenstock with the two thick buckle straps across the top of the foot. Back in the day, they were only available in various shades of brown and black but now they are back in a whole host of fun colors and metallic too! I really like the traditional Birkenstock in a fun color and white is perfect for summer. But if you are going for a metallic, I really like this one or this one.
This time around I opted for a non-traditional version I saw early on when I wasn’t so sure if I wanted to be seen in Birkenstocks (but I loved the idea of a comfortable and stylish summer sandal). I like that the straps are petite and the wrap-around ankle straps don’t immediately out me as a Birkenstock wearer. I’ve been wearing them all summer long with my denim cut off shorts.
Happy Summer!
