I know I’m dating myself, but who remembers the Seinfeld episode where George is dressed head to toe in velvet? I have to stifle a giggle when I think about how popular velvet is at the moment. When it first popped on my radar last spring I was dubious of the trend. But like George Castanza I’m now completely on board with swathing myself in velvet.
At first I looked for subtle ways to incorporate velvet into my wardrobe. I liked a lot of the velvet sneakers I was seeing in stores. I found a velvet hat that I knew I would get a lot of use out of in this transitional time of year when the sun still shines brightly. Finally, I scored an amazing velvet cross body bag (on sale, bonus!).

But then, I surprised myself. As I was quickly browsing through a local boutique on the hunt for something else entirely (isn’t that always the case) out of the corner of my eye I spied a jumpsuit in an interesting shade of purple. Mauve velvet to be precise. I headed to the dressing room to try it on — not at all expecting to like it. Jumpsuits are tricky. A velvet jumpsuit, whoa, that could go all kinds of wrong. My first thought was that it reminded me of a Juicy Couture sweatsuit from about ten years ago. Remember those? Whatever opinion you have of them, one thing’s for sure, they were super comfortable to wear.
This particular jumpsuit has a retro seventies feel. Cue Donna Summers and a spinning disco ball overhead. Despite all that, it didn’t take long for me to fall in love. I never expected to jump on the velvet bandwagon so quickly but I did and I love it. I’m giggling as I type this because I’m having a George Castanza moment.

What do you think of the velvet trend? Shoot me an email, I’m curious to hear what you think of it. Or if you want to reminisce about Seinfeld, I’m game.
