We’re just a few days away from the official start of spring but my spring cleaning has already begun. If you missed my post on responsible ways to do your spring closet clean out, you can read it here. Today I’m sharing everything I’ve learned about how to organize your closet after you’ve responsibly purged what no longer serves you.
:: ORGANIZE FIRST BY SEASON, THEN BY CATEGORY
When things aren’t in order, I just can’t think. It really helps to start the arduous process of reorganizing my closet by first sorting everything into two piles by season. I put all of my fall/winter clothing in one section of my closet and all of my spring/summer clothing in another section. The sections are above and below each other. When the seasons change I switch their location so that the current season is on the bottom and more accessible. After I sort by season, I create sub-categories. I put all of my skirts together. My shoes are all in one place as are my pants and jackets. You get the idea. Do this for everything in your closet.
:: ORGANIZE BY COLOR
Once I have everything organized by season, then by the type of clothing item, I hung them in order by color. So all my black sweaters are together. All of my white tee shirts are together and so on. I did this for my shoes also. I kinda prefer rainbow order but you could organize by color in any way that makes sense to you. It makes getting dressed so much easier when everything is organized by color. If I’m making a decision about shoes to wear with an outfit I can look at all of my color options together and then decide.
:: STORE ALL OF YOUR CLOTHING ITEMS IN YOUR CLOSET
That old saying “out of sight, out of mind” rings true here. If you don’t see it, you won’t wear it. Try to put all of your clothes, shoes, and accessories together in your closet if you can so you remember to wear them. If you have too much, consider whether you should do more purging to make everything fit. If closet space is an issue think of how you can use all your space efficiently to fit at least one season in one place. In my next post I’ll be sharing more closet space-saving ideas.
