We love traveling as a family and it is what we do the most. I jump at any opportunity, however, to getaway on a trip without the kids. My favorite destination when this happens is any city in Europe. Apparently I’m not the only one. I’ve heard from a few of you that are planning couples-only spring trips to Europe.
Packing for a spring trip to Europe is tricky. The weather is all over the place. Plus, as I’ve mentioned before, when I travel to a foreign country I really try to fit in and not look like a tourist. Balancing the goals of being prepared for fluctuating temperatures and not being bogged down in luggage is the obvious challenge. Keeping those objectives in mind, I’ve put together a packing guide to help you prepare for your spring trip to Europe.
Pack As If You Are Creating A Mini Capsule Wardrobe
Everything you pack should work together so you can maximize your suitcase real estate. Also think about pulling together pieces that will work well for dressing in layers.
I am a big fan of dresses. I think they are easy dressing options for warmer weather. I would pack a long sleeve dress and a couple of shorter sleeve or tank styles that can be layered up for warmth. I noticed while I was in Barcelona this year that European women often pair dresses and skirts with tights and leggings for cooler days so include a pair of each.
A jacket for layering on top is also ideal for cooler days. Two trendy options are a bomber or Moto jacket.
A skirt and jeans that can be paired with a tee shirt (a couple of long sleeve and short sleeve options) rounds out your essentials.
For a dressier evening outfit, it’s ideal if one of your dresses can do double duty, if not, a chic pair of pants or Capris and a dressy blouse is perfect.
Pack For Comfort And Versatility
Pack Comfortable Shoes
Shoes, oh the shoes. This is my downfall in packing. They take up so much room! Since Spring in Europe can mean anywhere from temps in the 40s to the 70s this is one area where it is best to be thoughtful in packing otherwise you risk losing all your valuable packing space to footwear. Plus comfort is the order of the day because you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking. European cities are famous for their cobblestone streets so I recommend low heels or wedges. I recommend packing one pair of comfortable booties, one wedge sandal, one pair of flats, and one pair of fashion-girl sneakers. I like to keep up with workout routines when I travel so I always have a pair of athletic sneakers in my suitcase too.
Keep The Jewelry Versatile and Minimal
I think it’s best to keep the jewelry minimal when you are traveling. I like to pack a few simple bracelets or hair ties that do double duty as bracelets like these, a delicate gold necklace, a simple pair of hoops, and one pair of statement earrings for a dressier outfit. You’ll want basics that you can wear everyday.
Bring Two Purses That Serve Multiple Purposes
I like to bring one oversize bag or tote that I can carry on the plane and carry around during the day if I need it. A leather backpack is also an option if you prefer a backpack to a tote bag. I also bring a clutch with a cross body strap. I usually detach the strap for the evening with a dressier outfit. Attaching the cross body strap gives me the flexibility to use the clutch as my wallet during day trips to hold my money and other essentials. Big European cities are notorious for pickpocketing, so having one small bag that’s attached to you is a great solution.
Don’t Forget The Hat!
A hat is a must for those sunny vacation days even if you are not at the beach. Your choice in headwear is dependent on whether you are primarily in the city or in the countryside or near water. For the latter, stick to a straw hat. One way to pack a hat so it doesn’t get crushed in your suitcase is to turn it upside down and fill it with socks and underwear so it doesn’t lose its shape. Place it in the bottom of your suitcase and fill your other items in around it.
Don’t forget to leave some space in your suitcase for any clothing purchases you make during your travels!

Hi there! I’m glad you like the post. I love visiting all those countries. I’m so jealous of your trip. I do think it can often be cool in those countries so I’d recommend a light jacket. I noticed when I was in Amsterdam and Germany that they love their skinny jeans and adidas superstars!! If you’ll be there in June I would opt for more skirts, sundresses, and off the shoulder tops! Have a great vacation!
