Every once in a while you come across a brand and products that are so beautiful that you just feel compelled to stop what you are doing and dig deeper to satiate your curiosity for more. That’s how I felt when I came across Second Daughter jewelry on Instagram.
As I was scrolling through my feed I stopped on an image of my girlfriend and her husband. They were beautiful and photogenic as always but what stopped me in my tracks was my girlfriend’s jewelry — a minimalist but stunning black leather cocktail ring. I tapped on the picture and discovered the tag, “Second Daughter.” Desperate to find out more I clicked on the link and scrolled through the images at Second Daughter’s Instagram page.
The jewelry was stunning. Not necessarily what I usually wear but there was just something so unique and modern and visually appealing to me. I was also surprised to see that the company was based in McLean, Virginia which is practically in my backyard. I was literally bowled over by my excitement over this discovery. By their Instagram feed I could tell the company was relatively new and I wanted to get in and meet with them fast.
So I did what any reasonable person would do and Insta-stalked the owner until she agreed to take a meeting with me, lol. Actually it wasn’t that hard because the owner and artist, Jessica Speckhard, was very receptive to a meeting. Within a few weeks, after she returned from a trade show in New York City, we were in our first meeting at her new location in McLean.
Before I go on about the company and the jewelry, I have to say a few words about Jessica. She is a beautiful and creative soul and we instantly bonded at our first meeting. I love her spirit. In addition to having a multitude of artisitic talents (don’t even get me started on the art hanging in her studio), she’s open, friendly, giving, and generous with her time.
She has roots in the Washington, DC area but spent most of her formative years with her family in Europe. She’s quite literally the second daughter. She’s young, she’s a mother, she’s a mom-preneur. She studied accessories design at Parsons the New School for Design in New York City and Corcoran College of Art in Washington, DC. Her jewelry vacillates between being unapologetically minimalist and maximalist and always looks extraordinary. Every time I walk into her store I leave with ideas about pieces I want to wear and I’m already mentally racing through the items in my closet to figure out how I will wear them.
Outfit Details: Cupcakes and Cashmere Lace Up Shift Dress (I’m wearing xs) similar here and here | Baublebar Stack Ring | OPI Gel Nail Color “call me”
I’m wearing the Luna leather cuff and Katarina earrings with mother of pearl. If you are local to Northern Virginia and DC, Second Daughter jewelry is sold at her store front in McLean, Lemoncello Boutique in Arlington, Ella Rue at MGM National Harbor, and Shop Ron David in Washington, DC.
I want you to know that I was not paid to write this post, I just love sharing new discoveries (and especially women-owned businesses) with my girlfriends.
