The last few winters I’ve been invited to costume-theme birthday parties. I haven’t always loved costume parties but the older I get the more I do! It shows your guests you mean business. When you get dressed in your favorite decades costume you automatically know this is gonna be a fun party.
Getting dressed for a theme party doesn’t have to mean making a run to Party City for your costume. The fun part is putting together items in your closet in fun and daring ways you wouldn’t do any other time. Or it’s an opportunity to invest in pieces you might have held off on otherwise. Now you have two reasons to say yes to the dress: a costume party and everyday life. Luckily, a lot of elements from the 70s and 80s are back in fashion. So in case you have a theme party to attend on the horizon, I’ve put together some ideas on outfits to wear. You can also check out my Pinterest page for more inspiration.
70s Outfit Inspiration
Most of you probably already have some elements of these costume ideas in your closet already: jumpsuits, metallic dresses or flowy gowns are the base of your costume. The key to achieving the 70s look is in the hair. Big waves, tight curls and hair pulled back with hairpins or barrettes will help you achieve the look. An A+ would be to find the biggest afro style wig like this to really achieve the look. Makeup should be heavy especially when it comes to eyeshadow (think lilac, blue, and green shadows). Finally, add in some 70s inspired accessories like big glasses, sparkly bags like this or this, and my personal favorite, a faux fur coat or vest! White boots would be a nice finishing touch.

80s Outfit Inspiration
Honestly so much of 80s fashion is back in stores and in our closets these days, it really is the easiest theme outfit to put together. The 80s were all about being big. Big hair, big shoulders, oversized jackets and coats. The key costume-y element you might splurge on is a mullet wig like this or this — it is the quintessential 80s look. Otherwise put your hair up in the highest ponytail you can with a scrunchie. Next, pull out all of your bold accessories: big belts, big hoop earrings, big bangles and your fishnet tights. Wear them all at the same time! Have a metallic dress or shoes? Wear it with a boxy leather jacket or blazer. Neons are, of course, another big theme from the 80s so you could also go that route.
