Teenagers are notoriously difficult to entertain. Attention spans are short so on any vacation with them you are likely to hear a reoccurring chorus of “I’m bored”, “Where are we going next?”, and “Is this IT?” I recently spent eight days with my fourteen year old daughter and her soccer team in Seattle, Washington. On our days off, we had time to explore the town. These are the things we did to entertain a group of teenagers on a trip to Seattle.
Day One
:: Visit Pike Place Market and Throw A Fish. The biggest highlight of our walk through Pike Place Market was throwing a fish. Our friend purchased 20 lbs of salmon that he shipped home which gave my daughter the opportunity to get in the booth and catch a fish. With a crowded hallway of onlookers she made the catch and the crowd erupted in cheers. No pressure. It was super cool and definitely a top memory of our trip to Seattle.
:: Make Your Mark on the Seattle Gum Wall. This is kind of cool and kind of gross at the same time. Don’t think too much about it. The Seattle gum wall is basically a long alley covered in chewing gum. The girls enjoyed leaving their mark on Seattle.
:: Ride the Seattle Great Wheel at Pier 57. Just a short walk from Pike Place is the Seattle Great Wheel where you can get a great view of the Seattle skyline and Mount Rainier beyond that. We didn’t visit the sky needle on this trip, I’d heard that it was pricey for what it was so if you are looking for a bird’s eye view of the city, this is a fun way to do that.
Day Two
:: Visit Chihuly Glass Museum and Garden. I had seen pictures of the Chihuly glass museum on social media and knew that I wanted to see it in person. On the day of our visit we did not get to see a glass blowing demonstration and my teenager expressed that she wished she could have seen that. All in all a visit to this museum with teens will last about 30 minutes. There’s a nice cafe and seating area for ice cream afterward.
:: Chill Out at Olympic Sculpture Park. The space needle is right next to the Chihuly museum so if you are up for it you can head there next. We opted to wander over to Olympic Sculpture Park and enjoy the water and city views. There’s plenty of seating and a nice walking path to enjoy a beautiful day.
Day Three
:: Ride the Ferry to Bainbridge Island and Bike Around the Island or Rent a Kayak. On our last day we rode the ferry to Bainbridge Island. We were intent on riding bikes around the island (there is a bike rental shop adjacent to the ferry terminal). As luck would have it, on the day of our visit, a Monday, the bike rental shop (and all others) were closed. Undeterred, we made our way over to the dock and found a water sports rental outfit where we were able to kayak around the Puget Sound.
