As some of you know, I just returned from a weeklong vacation in Spain. Now that our kids are a bit older I love that we’ve been able to resume foreign travel. So when my husband asked me if I wanted to accompany him on a trip to Barcelona while he attended a conference I jumped at the chance. Actually, I may have invited myself to come along, but whose keeping track? With grandma minding things at home we set off for a weeklong trip to Europe.
We used to travel abroad a lot before we had kids. When we travel I enjoy immersing in the culture. I definitely do not want to stand out as an American. Our trips to Europe are no different. So I put a lot of thought into what to pack for a week in Barcelona. Here’s my guide for what to wear on a trip to Europe (and look like a European).
The European Uniform
So what does one wear when they want to blend in and immerse into the European culture? Skinny jeans are huge as are skirts and dresses for women. When the weather is cooler, you’ll see European women pair leggings or tights with their dresses and skirts. You’ll be seeing a lot of pleated and high waisted pencil skirts in the upcoming season. On top, depending on the weather, moto jackets and sweaters are popular and statement tees are another good option when the weather is warmer.
Outerwear
Since our trip to Spain took place at the end of February, I knew a coat was a must. Though Barcelona is balmy most of the year, we were only expecting 40s and 50s during our stay. It turned out to be much colder (and rainier) than I expected. It even snowed while we were there which my Barcelonian girlfriends tell me is very unusual. Europeans favor wool coats and puffer jackets to stay warm. When the weather is warmer you will see men and women alike wearing trench coats which are super popular there and in the U.S. (and probably a great purchase to make for spring). A scarf is also a MUST. Consider it part of the European uniform. Europeans always wear scarves and beanies with their wool coats and puffer jackets. If you want to identify yourself as an American bring a baseball cap — you won’t see a native wearing one.
Footwear
In the winter, boots (and I’m not talking about snow boots) are a staple. Europeans wear boots virtually every day so bring a comfortable pair. While we are on the topic of boots, split shaft booties are huge this spring (especially with a peep toe when the weather gets warmer).
You will see Europeans wearing sneakers too but they are of the stylish variety and not the type of sneaker you would wear if you were actually going to exercise. Pretty much the only time you see a European wearing athletic wear is when they are actually engaged in working out. In the summer, sandals are key to pack. Flip flops are also not commonly worn.
