Summer is finally here! I’ve always been one to want to go on a getaway. Even if it’s just getting in my car and driving a few hours, that’s enough to scratch that vacation itch for me.
Packing is my Achilles heel. I used to start with the kids first and by the time it got to me, I was too tired to put anymore thought into packing and I would end up throwing a bunch of stuff together just to get out the door.
I finally got smart and typed out a weekend getaway packing list for the kids, and now that they are older, I’ve started handing them the list and telling them to get to it. I ALWAYS review what goes in the suitcase before it’s zipped up because I’ve seen some crazy clothing selections through the years, but it is nice that they give the process a jumpstart so I can spend more time thinking about what I’m going to wear. Which is exactly the way it should be, ha, ha!
Packing For A Summer Weekend Getaway
An Easy Summer Dress
A versatile summer dress (even better if it’s a LWD — little white dress) is an essential item for a summer weekend getaway. When the temperature (and hello, humidity!) soars, you’ll want to be in a cotton dress to keep cool. Ideally, this is one that can be dressed down with a baseball cap and sneakers, worn with a jean jacket for a breezy evening on the beach, or with heels and a clutch for a summer evening out.
Swimsuit
I can’t think of a summer weekend trip when I don’t want to have a swimsuit with me. One piece swimsuits are very popular at the moment. I have to admit, I’m still a fan of the two piece — it just feels more comfortable and I feel a little less squeezed in (or maybe that’s just me). Whatever you prefer, don’t leave home without a swimsuit (or two) and your favorite beach cover up. I like a kimono over a swimsuit!
Outfit Basics
Two pairs of shorts (one denim, one not), a pair of white jeans, a tee shirt or tank top, and a dressy blouse are your summer weekend outfit essentials.
Shoes
I could fill a whole suitcase just with shoes — just in case!! This is one area where I need to employ a little discipline so I don’t overpack. And who wants to pay the extra airline fees just to have a few more shoe options in another suitcase or be embarrassed in front of a line of people at the check-in counter while you nonchalantly reorganize your suitcase so it fits under the weight limit. I’ve been in both situations and I can tell you you’re better off deciding on your shoe situation before you leave home. Use the rule of three when packing shoes:
- Sneakers. pack one pair of athletic sneakers for your vacation workout
- Dressy Sandal. A nude sandal is perfect for dressing up jeans or a dress on a summer weekend.
- Brown Leather Sandals. You can wear them with your denim shorts or your cotton dress during the day. Wear them with your swimsuit and cover up to the pool
Oh, and I like to wear my fashion sneaker through airport security. Okay, so technically that’s four pair of shoes, but only three that you’ve packed. Details.
Accessories
A tote that you can throw your laptop, iPad, and anything else you might need to get through the day is essential. You’ll also want a versatile clutch to use in the evening. Don’t forget a hat for sun protection, and a pair of sunglasses.
And you’re off! Have fun wherever you are headed this summer!
