A dear friend recently asked if I would donate and attend an auction she was putting together for a local hospital charity. It’s hard to turn down an opportunity to raise money for a good cause. Plus, it was a great excuse to reconnect with an old friend that I see way too infrequently.
Interestingly the event called for white attire. I love a winter white theme because, as you know, I think white is appropriate to wear year round. It’s also unexpected and a nice break from the usual black cocktail party attire you see at this time of year. I think I’ve mentioned before I’m making a conscientious effort to break out of my black funk in the winter.
When I looked in my closet, however, I realized I didn’t really have anything dressy to wear to a winter white theme party. So naturally I jumped over to my computer to do some online shopping for something to wear. Revolve is one of my favorite places to shop for dressy pieces because they carry a variety of designers and tend to have a wider selection of upscale items (and often at a discount). Plus they offer free shipping and free returns.
I wasn’t sure what I was looking for — I would have been happy with a pair of wide leg trousers and a pop of color on top but I ultimately chose this simple A-line white dress. I liked the simplicity of the dress accented only by the ruffle trim on the sleeves. The two most important elements in choosing a winter white outfit are color and fabric. Because my skin color is naturally darker, I opt for a true white. If you are very fair you might want to steer more toward ivory or bisque.
Next, zero in on the fabric. You might be able to find plenty of white dress options on sale (especially in the winter) but you definitely should avoid linen or crochet fabrics or anything that is giving a summer vibe. Look for items made in wool or crepe fabric and your white will definitely feel more seasonally appropriate.
You can add a jolt of color with your accessories: shoes, handbag, or jewelry if you like. By the way, white booties are really hot right now and would look great paired with a midi-length dress or shorter.
