In the third and final installment of the spring closet cleaning series we are focusing on space saving storage ideas. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a lot of closet space but you can maximize the space you do have. Implement these three ideas to keep all of your seasonal clothing in one space and within reach.
:: HANG PANTS FROM THE WAISTBAND
One space saving trick is to hang your pants and jeans vertically from their waistband rather than folding them over on a hanger. Think about it: you essentially double the width of pants when you fold them over. I hang my pants with a spring-loaded hanger that inserts into the waistband. I use it for my skirts too Another option is to purchase pant hangers with clips or a trouser clamp that attaches to the waistband.
:: STORE SHOES ALTERNATING TOE/HEEL PLACEMENT
Shoe storage takes up so much room! You can save at least one inch per pair of shoes if you alternate toe/heel placement when you store them on a shelf. Most standard flat shoes take 8-9 inches of width to store. Alternating them can save you one inch of space per shoe. That can make a big difference if you have a lot of shoes. Plus alternating the toe/heel on your closet shelf allows you to see shoe detail and heel height.
:: USE STORAGE BASKETS
Storage baskets can be really helpful in holding accessories in one small place without taking up a lot of space. You can throw a ton of hats, scarves, or other accessories into those bins. They look neat and orderly but keep these items within reach.
