May 1 is derby day this year and that’s just around the corner. I know a lot of you in the D.C. area head to Gold Cup to celebrate. Whether you are headed to a derby party, Gold Cup or Preakness, getting dressed for these events can be tricky. Because, let’s be honest, derby fashion is in a league of its own. So I’ll walk you through step by step to building your derby day outfit so you can be off to the races in fashion and focus on the important part — having fun!
:: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE HAT
When you are building your derby outfit, your hat is the centerpiece. Start here. You want to find a hat or fascinator to wear that stands out and makes a statement. It really doesn’t matter what you choose aslong as you are comfortable.
:: THE DRESS IS NEXT
Let your hat be the star of the show. Unless you have your heart set on a new dress, I’m a huge fan of finding multiple uses for the clothes already in my closet. And it will help keep the cost of attending an event like this from becoming a burden. Your derby dress does not have to match your hat, it just needs to compliment it. If you missed it, read my post on how to choose complementary colors. If you opt for an elaborate hat or fascinator stick to a simple dress in a complimentary color. If your hat is simple you can amp up your dress and choose something more elaborate.
:: FOOTWEAR COUNTS
Footwear for these types of events is always tricky. If you are heading to Gold Cup you know you’ll be walking in a field, possibly a little tipsy, so maybe this isn’t the time to break out your stillettos. A wedge, fun boots, or even a cool sneaker might be better choices. If your party is indoor then by all means wear heels that are sky high!
