After my last post on ankle boots a reader asked for style advice on over the knee boots. Over the knee boots are tricky. Whenever I think of them I can’t help but remember an early scene in the movie Pretty Woman when Julia Roberts is strutting down Hollywood Boulevard in over the knee boots and a cut-out mini dress. It’s a sexy look and one that you may or may not be going for.
Over the knee boots can be worn everyday and not seem nearly as sexy as they do in the movie if styled intentionally. Here are two ideas on ways to style over the knee boots and a handy tip for keeping your over the knee boots over the knee if you’ve ever experienced droopy boots (it’s a real thing!).
:: Wear Over The Knee Boots With Skinny Jeans
This is the most common way I wear my over the knee boots. I try to make sure there’s enough contrast between the color of my denim and the boot so that it is flattering.
:: Wear Over The Knee Boots With A Dress
If you are trying to avoid the Pretty Woman effect pair your over the knee boots with a dress that hits at most an inch or two above the knee. Yet be sure there’s enough of a gap between the top of the boot and the hem of the dress. To achieve this you might have to roll your boots down a bit.
When there’s a larger gap between the top of the boot and the hem of the dress it creates a sexier look. In the outfits below notice the size of the gap between the skirt hem and the top of the boot and the impact it makes on the overall look.
:: How To Handle Droopy Boots
If you have lean legs you might experience what I call droopy boots. Some over the knee boots have less structure in the shaft so they skim your legs but the lack of structure can also cause them to slide down over the course of the day. It looks like this and is not at all flattering!
Here’s an easy solution: fashion tape! Apply fashion tape to secure the top of the boot to your pant leg or bare legs if to make sure the boots stay up.
Here are a few of my favorite over the knee boots.
